IT WAS THE LAST BRUNCH OF ‘07
… happened today for me in Brooklyn (Williamsburg, to be precise) at a place entitled Relish. Diner foodz were had. I had a breakfast burrito in every sense of the word. Here let me tell you what’s occurring in my world at the moment. Visiting, yes visiting one of the loves of my life, Lil’ Old Dana Keith. She welcomed me into the hood on Sunday morning nice and early. Then the following events transpired…
1.) SUNDAY AT THE WHITNEY WHERE THE COOL KIDS GO TO WANDER
We went to the Whitney and saw MANY THINGS THERE. I was deeply impressed and losing my damn mind at how great it was in there. Among the most awesome things that I saw in person were:
T.H. Benton - Autumn
Jackson Pollock - Untitled 1933-1939
Rothko - Entombment
De Kooning - Door to the River
Jasper Johns - Three Flags
Warhol - Green Coca-Cola Bottles
… as well as Lawrence Weiner retorospective called AS FAR AS THE EYE CAN SEE
and Kara Walker’s My Compliment, My Enemy, My Oppressor, My Love
IT WAS AWESOME BIG TIME. Seeing the American Modernist’s work up close was totally the biggest nerd dream that a person who went to art school can possibly think of. Kara Walker went to RISD and now teaches at Columbia. The major theme in her work is race and racism. Her medium is mostly cutouts (where she uses a razor to cut black paper into silhouettes). She has an interesting fanciful almost storybook like execution of her pieces that were all cut on black paper arranged on white walls. Three films of hers were also showing which consisted of characters as paper cutout puppets enacting some of her own ideas as well as quoting past films (Birth of a Nation being one of them). Racism, oppression and revenge are major points in her work which is extremely bold and outspoken and it was a real privilege to have seen it with my eyes.
2.) SUNDAY NIGHT + FUNDAY/SUPREMELY OMG
No big whoop but we went to a place called the Magician (this is on the lower east side). Had some vodka tonics and girl talk. Thank you GOD for this girl talk/girl time. Was loving it all over the place. The new people that I have met (friend’s of Dana’s) are extremely smart and engaging and very good all around. We picked music from a not so shitty juke box and Ertels felt good.
As the night progresses I kind of come to terms with that fact that I am wearing a red and whit striped shirt, my nails are painted red and I have red lipstick on. Match on match up with red shit was OK with me. Went to a couple more places and took up the grey hounds and got into a little drunk mode. Then:
I lifted some people up
Balanced drinks from the bar on my head (which I think is sort of impressive). There were witnesses. Some were fearful of this parlor trick. It only makes sense.
Talked about LA and met some people moving there.
Ate a crape with cheese and tomatoes and some kind of meat
Walked up six flights of stairs
Slept for a long time in a chair
… you know, TWILAH! Why not do it all?
3.) MONDAY - THE LAST BRUNCH
You know about it from above. Lucas and Michael joined the group and it was a busy busy day in the NYC. Nowhere to go but not too concerned about it. Found a place, had a bite. Dana (my host and B.F.F.A.E.A.E) tells me that she will take me for pork buns (the good Korean love of my life that I haven’t even met yet). I am looking way forward.
Met some more cool kids and went to two thrift stores and drank some coffee in a new place called Urban Rustic. NYE in NYC is happening tonight and I must say I think it will be a sweet one.
